Yet, unlike a modern city, its A&E department was moved to Cwmbran while the Royal Gwent hospital within the city remains as a minor injuries ward. \r\n\r\nAs such, the Grange hospital's A&E department suffers extreme waiting times, and is too small to serve the varying communities from Newport and the valleys beyond. Reopening the A&E department in the city of Newport will bring a much needed service back.","additional_details":"The Grange suffers long waiting times for patients who visit and even longer waiting times for those who arrive via ambulance. The actual size of the A&E department is minuscule, limited to no more than 20 chairs. It is evident after 5 years that servicing Newport and the surrounding communities is impractical for its size. \r\n\r\nThe people of Newport were severely disappointed when the A&E department was removed from the Royal Gwent Hospital on the 17th November 2020. It is impractical for a major city's main hospital to be in a neighbouring town. Furthermore, the Grange hospital A&E department is incapable of efficiently meeting the demand from Newport and beyond.\r\n\r\nI, and Newport, would like the Welsh Government and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to reopen the A&E department in the Royal Gwent Hospital. This positive step will alleviate severe strain on the Grange Hospital's A&E department, and will consistently bring down waiting times across the Health Board.","state":"open","signature_count":178,"threshold_for_referral":250,"threshold_for_debate":10000,"created_at":"2026-02-26T03:38:10.533Z","updated_at":"2026-06-08T19:11:10.000Z","rejected_at":null,"opened_at":"2026-03-09T11:07:44.995Z","closed_at":"2026-10-17T22:59:59.999Z","completed_at":null,"moderation_threshold_reached_at":"2026-03-02T08:33:50.000Z","referral_threshold_reached_at":null,"referred_at":null,"debate_threshold_reached_at":null,"scheduled_debate_date":null,"debate_outcome_at":null,"archived_at":null,"submitted_on_paper":false,"submitted_on":null,"creator_name":"Paul Haugh","rejection":null,"debate":null,"topics":[{"code":"health","name":"Health and Care Services"}],"signatures_by_country":[{"name":"Wales","code":"GB-WLS","signature_count":178}],"signatures_by_constituency":[{"id":"W09000050","name":"Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni","signature_count":14},{"id":"W09000052","name":"Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000053","name":"Caerdydd Penarth","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000054","name":"Casnewydd Islwyn","signature_count":103},{"id":"W09000055","name":"Ceredigion Penfro","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000060","name":"Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000061","name":"Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr","signature_count":6},{"id":"W09000062","name":"Sir Fynwy Torfaen","signature_count":48}],"signatures_by_region":[]}}}
