After six years with an IUD in place, it embedded in my uterine wall without my knowledge. I became pregnant and later suffered a septic miscarriage at 17 weeks, losing my baby.\r\nI was told to check my strings, but that advice alone was not enough, and would never have been enough for me to prevent what was to come. \r\nRegular reviews by a professional could have helped prevent the loss and trauma that followed.","additional_details":"We call on the Welsh Government to introduce mandatory IUD check-ups every two years throughout the lifespan of the device.\r\nWomen are often advised to \"check their strings\" following IUD insertion, but this alone may not identify complications such as displacement, embedding, migration, or contraceptive failure.\r\n\r\nRegular two-yearly reviews would provide opportunities to:\r\n\r\nConfirm the IUD remains correctly positioned and functioning as intended;\r\nIdentify complications early, before serious consequences;\r\nReduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and pregnancy loss;\r\nProvide ongoing education about warning signs, and symptoms;\r\nImprove patient safety and confidence in long-term contraception.\r\n\r\nNo woman should have to experience preventable trauma, pregnancy loss, infection, or other serious complications because routine follow-up is not available. Introducing regular IUD reviews would help problems be identified sooner, improving outcomes and strengthening women's healthcare across Wales.","state":"open","signature_count":102,"threshold_for_referral":250,"threshold_for_debate":10000,"created_at":"2026-07-09T08:57:40.474Z","updated_at":"2026-07-16T17:44:50.000Z","rejected_at":null,"opened_at":"2026-07-16T07:52:09.726Z","closed_at":"2026-10-01T22:59:59.999Z","completed_at":null,"moderation_threshold_reached_at":"2026-07-09T09:31:40.000Z","referral_threshold_reached_at":null,"referred_at":null,"debate_threshold_reached_at":null,"scheduled_debate_date":null,"debate_outcome_at":null,"archived_at":null,"submitted_on_paper":false,"submitted_on":null,"creator_name":"Melissa Rodenburg","rejection":null,"debate":null,"topics":[{"code":"health","name":"Health and Care Services"}],"signatures_by_country":[{"name":"England","code":"GB-ENG","signature_count":27},{"name":"Netherlands","code":"NL","signature_count":3},{"name":"Wales","code":"GB-WLS","signature_count":72}],"signatures_by_constituency":[{"id":"W09000048","name":"Afan Ogwr Rhondda","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000050","name":"Blaenau Gwent Caerffili Rhymni","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000051","name":"Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000052","name":"Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf","signature_count":6},{"id":"W09000053","name":"Caerdydd Penarth","signature_count":12},{"id":"W09000054","name":"Casnewydd Islwyn","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000055","name":"Ceredigion Penfro","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000056","name":"Clwyd","signature_count":1},{"id":"W09000057","name":"Fflint Wrecsam","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000058","name":"Gwynedd Maldwyn","signature_count":29},{"id":"W09000059","name":"Gŵyr Abertawe","signature_count":2},{"id":"W09000060","name":"Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg","signature_count":4},{"id":"W09000061","name":"Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr","signature_count":2}],"signatures_by_region":[]}}}
