Completed petition A call to revise Cadw’s hold upon churches in Wales
We call upon the National Assembly for Wales to investigate the inflexible way in which Cadw enforces its regulations upon active, vibrant congregations using listed buildings across Wales, thereby keeping them in a state of architectural inertia, unable to take advantage of modern developments in building materials and making it difficult for churches to make changes necessary for them to serve the coming generation and the local community.
More details
Many churches across Wales using listed buildings as places of worship and centres of service to local communities find their work made unnecessarily difficult by the restrictions which CADW insists upon. Some regulations may be suitable to maintain an ancient monument or castle, but not for buildings which are in use regularly to serve the local community. Extra costs are also enforced by their insistence upon using original materials, so we were unable to put double glazing when we had all our windows replaced with wooden frames recently. The inability of Cadw to reach decisions quickly also hinders the work of these churches in the communities they serve & interact with. Many church leaders within Wales are of a like mind.
