Rejected petition Make it a legal requirement for cyclists to use cycle paths if available.

Over the last few years, cycling on Welsh roads has increased dramatically. As such the WG has seen fit to invest millions in constructing miles and miles of dedicated cycle paths for cyclists to be safe when out and about. From what I see on my travels, these paths are not being used and the cyclist is choosing to stay on the road and be a nuisance doing so. I demand that the Senedd make it a legal requirement for the paths to be used where there is one and fines to those who don't obey!

More details

Lets face it, the roads are more and more dangerous these days with a massive increase in cars over the last decade. what makes this worse is cyclists being on UK roads with no regard for those around them.

they flout the rules by running red lights, mounting pavements where there is no dedicated cycle path to get around having to wait in traffic, they don't follow the speed limits when they are riding downhill.

Its about time that they are removed from roads. The WG as I said above has spent millions making safer paths for them and they refuse to use them! If a cyclist is caught riding a bike on a road when there is a path available to them then they are stopped and fined like a motorist would be if they were breaking the law. If there is no path next to the road but part of the road has one they must mount it as soon as they approach the path. repeated flouting of this rule should be met with being banned from riding a bike like a driver would!

END OF!!!!

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the Senedd or Welsh Government is not responsible for.

The Government of Wales Act 2006 establishes the extent of the Senedd’s power to make new laws and amend existing law (also known as legislative competence). Schedules 7A and 7B of the 2006 Act set out the issues which are ‘restricted’ or ‘reserved’ - i.e. areas where the UK Parliament, not the Senedd, can legislate.

In order to make it a legal requirement for cyclists to use cycle paths, a road traffic offence would have to be created for failing to do so. Road traffic offences are the responsibility of UK Parliament and not the Senedd or Welsh Government.

As a result, it is not possible for the Senedd to take the action called for by your petition.
