Rejected petition Stop the pay rise for Senedd Members

Despite public sector workers getting a pay freeze, Senedd politicians are to receive a 2.4% pay rise after May’s elections.

We the undersigned believe that, with around 1 in 4 in Wales living in fuel poverty, more ordinary people suffering from the economic consequences of COVID, and Senedd Members earning nearly 3x the average wage in Wales, this pay rise is wholly inappropriate and should be halted.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the Senedd or Welsh Government is not responsible for.

The Independent Remuneration Board is responsible for setting the pay and expenses of Members of the Senedd. The Remuneration Board makes its decisions independently of the Senedd and Welsh Government and therefore the Senedd does not possess the powers to take the action proposed by the petition.

The Board is currently consulting on its proposals for the Sixth Senedd. Information about how to respond can be found here: https://www.remunerationboard.wales/consultation-on-the-annual-review-of-the-determination-for-the-sixth-senedd/
