Rejected petition Change the Welsh teaching entry requirements

I am a Welsh speaker (2nd language), who wants to teach Primary in Wales. I have Dyscalculia, and achieving a B in GCSE Maths is out of my reach. Unfortunately, Unless this grade requirement is lowered to England’s requirements, I will not be able to teach in Wales. I will not be able to put my Welsh language skills to use within my Teaching career.

Let’s change the entry requirements for Teaching. Changing this grade requirement to a C could lead to an increase of teachers training in Wales.

More details

According to Get Into Teaching, The GCSE entry requirements for England include a C in GCSE Maths.

According to Discover Teaching, The GCSE entry requirements for Wales include a B in GCSE Maths.

Statistics for Wales state that Wales are not meeting the numbers for their teacher training targets. With a shortfall of 44% for Secondary School teachers and 22% for Primary School teachers in 2018/2019. This is the 5th year in a row that teacher training targets in Wales have been missed. Essentially, this will lead to a shortage of teachers in Wales.

Achieving a C in GCSE Maths should be sufficient enough to show that an individual's Maths skills are academically strong enough to teach.

Let’s change the entry requirements for Teaching. Changing this grade requirement to a C could lead to an increase of teachers training in Wales. Otherwise, those who cannot achieve a B in GCSE Maths will continue to train/teach in England, whilst the number of teachers in Wales continues to decrease.
