Rejected petition Stop Cardiff University scaling down students grades . We want the grades we earned and deserve!!!
Cardiff University has scaled down grades one day before final transcripts were to be released due to the number of students who received a first-class grade. They claim this is due to the lack of exams.
Pandemic restrictions meant adapted final assessments were created (to replace exams) which students would complete at home using external resources. The university now deems this as an advantage.
A reduction (1-3%)has been applied to entire modules, (not just exam replacement)
More details
C.U states that scaling should not be carried out on cohorts less then 15 people ( Chinese, Italian and Portuguese meet this criteria)
- paid full £9,000 tuition, recieved reduced contact hours (from 3 to 2)
- worked with limited resources e.g limited/no access to Library.
- reduced help/ support for disabled students - impacted due to limited contact hours/ changes to learning style/ recommendations
- limited help for increased number of students with mental health issues
- some missed important year abroad and finished degree without opportunity to improve language skills
- students in different time zones had to attend virtual lectures following GMT hours
- working in environments not fit for study
- changes to exams making students adapt last minute to different content and assignments (then later being penalised for this)
- feedback and grades being given back late
- students where penalised for not attending in person lessons as online lessons were limited
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the Senedd or Welsh Government is not responsible for.
It asks the Senedd to do something that it is not able to do.
Universities are largely autonomous institutions. The Further and Higher Education Act 1992 states it shall be for the institution to determine the assessments which are appropriate for the grant of any award.
Welsh Ministers therefore cannot impose conditions on how a university administers its assessments and examinations. As a result, it is not possible for the Senedd to take the action called for by your petition.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards
