Rejected petition Open our historic churches for visitors

Many of our historic church buildings, including some of the most important ones in Wales are usually locked outside of worship times. Most of these are controlled by the Church in Wales. If you are not a member of that congregation you are effectively barred from visiting these jewels of Welsh heritage. The Church in Wales should be made to keep them open for Welsh people to visit our own historical, ecclesiastical and cultural heritage.

More details

I recently tried to visit several historic churches including Llanbadarn Fawr (arguably one of our most important historic churches), St Peter's Carmarthen and other medieval churches and was so disappointed to find them locked. Although the Church in Wales now owns these they began as Catholic Churches and are part of the historical fibre of the Welsh nation. They should be open for public visits.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the Senedd or Welsh Government is not responsible for.

The restrictions contained in the COVID-19 legislation brought in by the Welsh Government during the pandemic required many buildings that are normally open to the public, including places of worship, to close.

Covid regulations no longer restrict the opening of places of worship.

Opening places of worship is a matter for whichever religious denomination owns and operates the place of worship.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards
