Rejected petition Refer to St. George’s Channel as Gordon Bastian Straits.

The name St. George’s Channel has been used since the 1500’s by English settlers on either side of the Celtic Sea. But as a sign of respect to Welsh Seafarers, from now on we would like for it to be referred to as the Gordon Bastion Straits after he became a recipient of the highest civilian award for gallantry in the United Kingdom.

More details

Gordon Love Bastian, GC, MBE was an engineering officer in the British Merchant Navy who was awarded the Albert Medal for risking his own life to save other members of the crew of SS Empire Bowman after it was torpedoed on 31 March 1943.

As a tribute to Welsh Seafarers the change would be most welcomed by the Welsh Maritime and Shipping community.
