Rejected petition Stop the 20mph limit in Wales

Nobody would object to a 20mph limit outside schools and on housing estates but to force this limit on all 30mph roads will cause havoc.

More details

The Welsh Government seems to be at war with the motorist. They want to force people to stop using their cars and use public transport of cycles. Speed limits are being dropped even on our motorways. The 20mph limit on all 30mph roads is a step too far. They are not talking about roads outside schools. It will be all 30mph roads. Many dual carriageways have 30mph limits. Including Fabian Way in Swansea and major routes around Cardiff.
Cars and lorries are not built to cruise at 20mph. You will never get out of 2nd or 3rd gear. Fuel economy will drop. Spark plugs will foul up and DPF filters on diesel cars will block up.
Speeding fines will go through the roof. Just try driving at 20mph on a dual carriageway.
Safety will actually get worse. People will be too busy concentrating on their speedometers to look where they are going.
It would be much better if the Welsh Government spent the £33 million on fixing some potholes or getting some extra doctors into A+E. It will save far more lives.

Why was this petition rejected?

There’s already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue, or if the Petitions Committee has considered one in the last year.

A very similar petition was considered by the Committee earlier this year. However, I have just published a different petition - "Hold a public poll on the reduction of the default speed limit BEFORE it comes in to force" - which might be of interest.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards
