Rejected petition Notify UK government a wish to hold a referendum on returning to UK parliament.

In 1997 a referendum was held asking the Welsh people if they wanted their laws governed by the National Assembly for Wales ( now known as Senedd Cymru ) or by U.K. Parliament.

Thinking to be the better choice the vote favoured in putting our trust into the National Assembly for Wales ( now changed to Senedd Cymru ) for better control over our own laws and government policies.

During that time, Wales had lagged behind on COVID vaccinations and their choice’s made, gave Wales the second worst coronavirus rate in the world.

This new law of 20 mph put in place by Senedd Cymru. Has caused unnecessary issues to motorists and business’s giving Wales the nickname ‘Snails ‘ which will no doubt affect the tourist trade. Adding more damage to the environment by higher revs as it burns more fuel and damaging car/bus engines as not being designed to continuously do 20 mph. The feedback on the towns it was tested on were negative. And a petition which reached 20,000 signatures asking for the 20mph law to not go through (before implicated ) was voted against.

It has been proven that the welsh people’s best interests have not been succeeded . And with the stubbornness of Senedd reluctancy regarding the new law I think the people should have a say and a referendum held, to see if the Welsh people want to continue being governed this way or reunite with U.K. parliament.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the Senedd or Welsh Government is not responsible for.

The Senedd was established as a legislative body by section 1(1) of the Government of Wales Act 2006. Abolishing the Senedd would require a repeal of this section which could only be done by the UK Government proposing legislation to the UK Parliament. Prior to revoking section1 of the Government of Wales Act a referendum would have to be called by the UK parliament where the people of Wales would have to vote in favour of abolishing the Senedd.
As a result, it is not possible for the Senedd to take the action called for by your petition.

Further information about the powers and responsibilities of the Senedd can be found here: https://senedd.wales/how-we-work/our-role/powers/

You may wish to consider petitioning the UK Parliament about this issue instead: https://petition.parliament.uk/
