Rejected petition Safeguard the future of Denbighire’s libraries by ringfencing existing service levels and budgets
Denbighshire County Council is currently proposing to reduce the library service (and One Stop Shop) by 50% meaning that four of the county’s eight libraries will be limited to opening 12 hours per week (3 hours per day across four weekdays).
The reduction in hours will hit those most vulnerable in society by severely limiting access to IT/internet, literature, community events, council services (i.e. assistance with Blue Badge applications, referrals to housing, transport, benefits, etc.).

Denbighshire County Council proposes a severe cut to library services across the county, limiting access to essential council services from April 2024. The cuts will not only limit the libraries’ opening hours resulting in a number of job loses but will also reduce the offerings of crucial groups such as Bookstart.
If these proposals are approved there is a very real risk that some of the libraries will be become unsustainable and disappear completely.
The council have to date failed to produce an equalities impact report showing the extent such cuts will have on the most vulnerable in society and have also failed share any possible alternative savings that could be made within other services.
There is a great deal of support for the library service and all it has to offer from residents across the county but to secure it from these proposals and future cuts it’s budget needs to be ring fenced to prevent an essential service being damaged, or worst, lost completely.
