Rejected petition Enact a stronger Welsh Language Act to protect the future of our native language
The Welsh Labour-run Government has a set a target to reach 1 million Welsh speakers by 2050.
However, the reality is that the Welsh Language is not thriving - it's dying. The statistics from the last 3 Censuses are cast-iron proof -> 21% -> 19%-> 17.8%.
In it's heartlands in particular, the Welsh language is crumbling, with speakers in Gwynedd, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion reducing by large numbers.
More details
I am calling for the Welsh Government to enact a stronger Welsh Language Act that applies to the private sector, as seen in Belgium and Switzerland.
Additionally, English should also remain to be treated equally and it's status should not change.
If Welsh Labour are serious about reaching 1 millions speakers, rather than 1 million people who can say "Bore Da" then a stronger Welsh language legislation is non-negotiable for them to meet this target.
