Rejected petition Investigate whether the organ donation policy can be amended to limit family intervention

The organ donation law was changed from an opt-in policy to an opt-out in 2015. This was heralded as a revolutionary change that would result in a major increase in the number of transplants taking place. This caused a 6% increase and a drop in transplants the following year.

The current system is that you are assumed "not to object" to organ transplant as opposed to consenting FOR organ transplant, which leaves your family to make the decision on your behalf, while grieving.

More details

38% of families in this situation refuse, resulting in nearly 3400 missed opportunities for transplantation every year. 33% of these were because it never came up. This leads to over 450 people dying every year waiting for a life saving transplant.

Save our families from having to make this decision at a difficult time and introduce a hard opt-out system unless a patient has documented religious or personal desires not to donate.
