Rejected petition Protect funding for alternative provision/EOTAS of children unable to access school.
ALN Reform Wales petition to protect funding for:
a) the alternative provision/EOTAS of children unable to access school due to physical or mental health needs; and
b) to reinstate withdrawn home education grants.
There are planned changes to alternate provisions and the home tuition service. This will be detrimental to children who are unable to attend school. Home ed grants have been removed from providers at short notice meaning some children are unsure how they will continue with planned GCSEs.
More details
There are diverse reasons why learners do not attend a mainstream school and are in receipt of EOTAS. These include having an illness (physical and mental), refusing to attend school (school phobic), having challenging behaviour associated with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and being or at risk of being excluded from school. For some children in EOTAS, the structure of the mainstream school does not enable them to receive their education in a way suited to their individual needs.
Home education grants have been removed from providers at short notice meaning some children are unsure how they will continue with planned GCSEs.
NASUWT and NEU Cymru both opposed the council bringing tuition under schools’ direct control.
