Rejected petition An automatic general election if the party in government changes their leader and therefore First Minister mid-term.

We have seen in recent years the Conservative Government in Westminster change their leader and therefore Prime Minister a few times, and more recently in the Senedd with Vaughan Gething replacing Mark Drakeford as First Minister.

More details

I firmly believe that a leader of a party standing for election in the Senedd should serve for the duration of the Senedd and not give it up half-way through for reasons other than death, or serious illness. The law should be changed to ensure that if the First Minister changes, it should trigger an immediate general election, so that the whole electorate can decide who leads Wales.

Why was this petition rejected?

It did not collect enough signatures to be referred to the Petitions Committee.

Petitions need to receive at least 250 signatures before they can be considered in the Senedd.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards
