Rejected petition Scrap the all-Wales cockle permit and sea bass management plan.
Give fishermen their say.
I’ve been a fisherman for the last 30 years and I’ve never seen so many wrong decisions by the Welsh Government, they are ruining our livelihoods. The Burry inlet had 50 licensed cockle pickers since 1965 that has supported generations but now in 2025 they are not renewing the licenses making 50 people out of work, the three river cockle beds are free for all, we were promised in 1998 that it would be licensed but they failed again it’s due to open in two weeks with a TAC (total allowable catch) of 800 tons with 120 boats turning up that carry a ton each gives us full-time fishermen 8 days work.
More details
We are also worried about our bass fishing as they’re making decisions without speaking to experienced fishermen. There is an advisory group that is full of yes men anyone who goes on there has to agree with the fisheries or you get taken off.
Welsh Government fisheries are also taking every public cockle bed in Wales that a lot of people are not aware of.
