Rejected petition Have a clear pathway for 16-18 year olds with additional needs when needing NHS care
My son has additional needs and health needs, I never expected turning 16 meaning I would have to fight to get him appropriate health care.
He was left for eight days in pain with a fractured elbow that needed urgent surgery.
The initial issue causing the delay was that paediatric services refused his after care as he was now 16 and adult services refused his care because he had additional needs.
More details
There are many thing my son and others like him can't do like vote, buy alcohol, take legal issues forward because they are deemed a child under 18, yet at his most vulnerable he is suddenly an adult who should function with no support as officially adults can't have support unless it's visiting time.
In the end my son went to an adult ward where the staff were fantastic and allowed me to sleep on a chair by him, he was there with a criminal with police escort and a prisoner with guard escort who was verbally aggressive to staff. I have asked for info on the pathway from my local trust and Welsh Government and no one has responded with the information. If people like my son have nowhere they officially fit then why isn't it thought about to make somewhere? Or agree 16 is not an adult and allow choices for young people and their families with their care?
