• Wales has seen a surge in planning applications for new poultry farms, particularly in rural areas such as in Powys. The cumulative impacts of these developments are often ignored in the planning process.
• Farms often avoid full Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) by staying below the size thresholds for mandatory reviews, allowing unchecked proliferation.
Powys alone is home to over 10 million chickens, with more than 150 intensive poultry units (IPUs). These units typically house tens of thousands of birds each and are concentrated in small areas, overwhelming local ecosystems.
• A 2021 report by the Wye and Usk Foundation highlighted Powys as having “a density of intensive chicken farms unparalleled in the UK.”

Why was this petition rejected?
