Rejected petition Strengthen the political education element of statutory guidance for the Curriculum for Wales in secondary schools
Young people are the future of Wales and I think that young people need education on the UK political system, its parties, its challenges and its elections. Although comparing and evaluating systems of government, and ‘rights and responsibilities of citizens’, is included in the statutory guidance for 16 year olds (by Progression Step 5), this guidance should be strengthened to put much more emphasis on political education being taught as part of the school curriculum from the age of 14.
Not all young people will be interested, sure, however it is needed so they can be involved in our democracy and its democratic procedures.

The Electoral Commission surveyed 2,516 young people last year and only 45% of them said they were interested in politics and it dips to 36% when it goes to local politics. Source: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/sites/default/files/2025-03/Young%20Voices%20on%20Democracy%202025.pdf
