Rejected petition Help first time engaged couples on low income and benefits with tying the knot
Weddings mark a significant life milestone, yet many first-time couples on low income or benefits in Wales face financial barriers to celebrate their union. We urge the Welsh Government to introduce support or grant schemes to help cover essential wedding costs, ensuring all couples can marry with dignity, regardless of income. This will promote equality, strengthen families, and support community cohesion.
More details
Many couples in Wales on low incomes or benefits struggle to afford the basic costs of a wedding, often delaying or forgoing marriage altogether. A modest wedding can cost thousands, putting it out of reach for many. Marriage is a legal right and a foundation for stable families and communities. Supporting low-income couples with grants or funding schemes would promote social equality, improve mental wellbeing, and boost local economies through venues and services. We call on the Welsh Government to consider a dedicated support fund, ensuring financial hardship is not a barrier to lifelong commitment. Research by national charities highlights the positive social outcomes of stable partnerships, yet financial exclusion persists. We believe love and commitment should not be limited by income.
