Rejected petition Extending the Welsh Language Standards to Town and Community councils
The Welsh language standards do not currently extend to Town and Community Councils, even though many have large budgets and provide extensive services to their communities. It is high time the Welsh Government brought forward regulations that place Welsh language duties on Town and Community Councils in Wales.
More details
There is also a need to re-examine what services Town and Community Councils provide on behalf of County Councils. At present there is very little work by Town and Community Councils which operate bilingually in non-Welsh speaking areas. Language standards are in legislation to ensure that the Welsh language is not treated less favourably than English. The truth is that the Welsh language is treated less favourably among public bodies that are excluded from the standards and do nothing to promote the language. The guidelines need to be strengthened and extended.
