Rejected petition Add a no bread sign for the animals at the castle nature reserve at Caerphilly.
I've done some research about what is healthy for the animals (ducks, geese and swans) and bread is unfortunately not one of them. I go there at least 4 times a week, and I see people feeding them large quantities of bread. I know that it’s convenient to bring with you, but it makes them unwell with how large quantities are frequently fed by it.

Ducks need a varied diet to be healthy. Bread doesn't have much nutritional value and fills the duck's stomach so that it doesn't forage for foods it would naturally eat, which can lead to malnutrition.
Uneaten soggy bread can cause a build-up of bad nutrients, which can lead to more algae growing around water, more diseases and more pests. Hannah Booth, our environment manager for Wales & South West, explains: "An excess of any food will encourage rats, which can also carry diseases and may predate eggs and young chicks."
