Petition NRW to begin routine dredging of Welsh rivers with the support of the Senedd

Our routine dredging programme was downgraded in the 1990's mainly due to the EU Water Framework Directive. Since then our rivers have gradually become clogged, with a reduction in water capacity as well as increasing tidal surges. This is now leading to regular and devastating flooding, overspill often resulting in loss of homes, business and sadly lives, as well as damaging land, farms, wildlife and livestock. Even our roads are now affected by our rivers overspilling and putting people's lives at risk.

More details

Unfortunately, here in Wales we seem to be served by inadequate councils that struggle to maintain our highways and drainage systems to deal with the ever increasing rainfall/flooding in Wales. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are the authority that maintains our waterways amongst other things.
We must restart regular routine dredging of our rivers to allow them to carry rainfall etc to their fullest. Diversion and planting trees are not the only answer, we need to unclog the arteries of Wales, our rivers!
Please support us to demand the Welsh Government instructs and gives monetary assistance to Natural Resources Wales to immediately start a programme of dredging to reduce the ongoing flooding, loss of life, livestock, businesses, homes. This flooding is detrimental to our economy, environment and ecology, we need to work together to reduce the damage it causes.
