Petition Introduce mandatory continuous automated odour monitoring at all landfill sites across Wales
Communities across Wales are experiencing persistent landfill odours that significantly affect health, wellbeing and quality of life. Current monitoring relies heavily on intermittent site visits, operator self-reporting and complaint-led investigations, which often fail to capture real-time impacts. Without continuous automated monitoring, harmful odour events can go undetected, disputed or minimised, leaving residents without effective protection or transparency.

Automated odour and gas monitoring technology is already available and used internationally. Continuous data would improve transparency, enable faster regulatory response, support enforcement decisions, and rebuild public trust. Independent, real-time monitoring would reduce disputes between residents, operators and regulators, and ensure environmental and public health protections are applied consistently across Wales.
