Petition End Alcohol Multi-Buys and Loyalty Card Discounts in Wales
We call on the Welsh Government to:
1. Ban all multi-buy promotions (e.g., "Buy One Get One Free", "3 for £20") on alcoholic products in retail settings.
2. Prohibit loyalty card "member-only" discounts (Clubcard/Nectar-style deals) on alcohol, ensuring the Minimum Unit Price (MUP) is the baseline without further incentive to over-purchase.
3. Mandate "Tobacco-Style" Graphic Health Warnings on all alcohol packaging sold in Wales to illustrate the long-term health consequences of consumption.
More details
Rising Mortality: Public Health Wales reported a record high of 562 alcohol-specific deaths in 2023—a 15.6% increase from the previous year.
• Healthcare Pressure: There are approximately 12,000 alcohol-specific hospital admissions in Wales annually. It is estimated that Welsh hospitals handle nearly 1,000 alcohol-related admissions every week.
• Inequality Gap: Individuals in the most deprived areas of Wales are 2.8 times more likely to be admitted for alcohol-specific conditions than those in the least deprived areas.
• Impulse Buying: Research from Alcohol Change UK suggests that over 60% of drinkers report buying more alcohol than they intended because of special offers or promotions.
By removing these incentives, we can protect the most vulnerable and reduce the strain on the NHS.
