Rejected petition Pause remaining Cimla Active Travel works pending a new consultation and independent safety review

We call on the Welsh Government to pause all remaining phases of the Cimla Active Travel scheme until a new, representative consultation is carried out and until independent safety assessments have been completed on the works already installed. Cimla has 4,848 residents, yet only 224 people responded to the consultation on the Active Travel scheme, less than 5% of the population. Residents have raised concerns about safety, congestion and a lack of awareness of the original consultation.

More details

1. Consultation Engagement
-Cimla population: 4,848 (ref Census 2021)
-Estimated adults: 4,048
-Dwellings: 2,133
-Consultation responses: 224

This equates to:
4.6% of the population
5.5% of adults
10.5% of households

This is not a representative sample for a project of this scale.

2. Resident Concerns
-Reduced visibility at junctions
-Confusing road layouts
-Increased congestion
-Safety concerns for children and older residents
-Lack of awareness of the consultation
-Steep gradients limiting cycling uptake
-Doubts about value for money

3. Community Impact
-Residents feel unheard
-Changes feel imposed
-Concerns about long‑term safety
-Fear that further works will worsen existing issues

4. What Residents Are Asking For
-Pause remaining works
-New, well‑publicised consultation to every household in Cimla and surrounding impacted villages
-Independent safety assessments
-Option to abolish or redesign remaining phases
-Community led alternatives
