Rejected petition Stop the HGV’s driving through Duffryn and Coedkernew!
We are calling for urgent action to curb the excessive number of heavy goods vehicles using our local roads, that were never designed for this volume or weight of heavy traffic and that provide vehicle and pedestrian access to homes and schools.
From 7am, six days a week, convoys of heavily laden lorries repeatedly thunder through our community to reach a processing plant off Lighthouse Road. What was once a pleasant place to live, walk or cycle is now noisy, polluted, unsafe and unpleasant.
More details
The plant’s location within a supposed site of Special Scientific Interest raises separate questions.
Many people have commented that the lorries are driven with excessive speed and are reluctant to give way. I recently experienced a near miss with one at the Asda roundabout, right next to a school and a pedestrian crossing, and meeting one head on at the single-lane railway bridge on Lighthouse Road can be frightening.
We all know our roads are in a shocking state, but it can be no coincidence or surprise that the worst potholes align with the routes these heavy lorries take, nor that poor repairs are being rushed ahead of an election.
These lorries must be re-routed safely with proper consideration for the local community before a serious accident occurs.
This petition has been raised because repeated reports and concerns have been dismissed by Newport City Council.
