Petition Ban the use of AI-generated images by political parties.
With the rapid improvements to AI-generated image technology, the line between real or fake has become increasingly difficult to identify. No longer can it be said that “seeing is believing”. Rather, it is more and more the case that “seeing is deceiving”.
In order to encourage public trust and to ensure that political messaging is fair, truthful and informative, the use of AI-generated imagery by political parties and their elected members needs an immediate ban.
More details
The potential for spreading misinformation via AI-generated images is an obvious concern. Furthermore, we don’t yet know the extent to which AI-generated, hyper-realistic imagery influences the public.
Therefore, I suggest the immediate ban on its political use, until the impacts of these images on the electorate is better understood.
In addition, since the potential for misleading the public, whether deliberately or through negligence, could bring a Senedd Member’s position into disrepute, I would therefore suggest that there should be real consequences for repeated breaches of this ruling.
I would ask that members have the opportunity to discuss this issue, and that a vote be conducted re: an initial ban, whilst the impact of AI-generated imagery on the electorate is better understood.
The Senedd should be setting the example for the conduct, decency and responsible use of new technologies. Images that distort the truth, or are outright lies, have no place in politics.
