Rejected petition Tell the FAW: Restore Saturday as Welsh Football's Main Matchday
Saturday football has been part of Welsh life for generations, bringing together supporters, families and local communities.
The increasing move to Friday night fixtures has made attending matches more difficult because of work, school and long-distance travel. Many clubs also rely on volunteers who cannot always prepare for games on a weekday.
We ask the FAW to restore Saturday as the default matchday for domestic football and protect a tradition that has served Welsh clubs well.
More details
Football is more than 90 minutes—it is a community tradition that connects generations. Friday night fixtures may suit some clubs, but they should never replace Saturday as the standard day for Welsh domestic football. Many supporters cannot leave work early enough to travel across Wales, resulting in lower away attendances and reduced matchday atmosphere. Families with children face late journeys before school days, while volunteers who prepare grounds, operate facilities and support clubs often struggle to commit on weekday evenings.
Saturday football allows communities to come together, increases accessibility, supports local businesses and preserves the traditions that have helped Welsh football grow. This petition is not asking to abolish Friday football entirely, but to restore Saturday as the primary fixture day, with Friday matches remaining an optional choice where clubs and supporters genuinely agree. Welsh football should put supporters, volunteers and communities first.
