Petition Amend the RSE Code so that sex education is not taught before age 12.
The current RSE Code does not set a minimum age for sex education. We believe that children under 12 should not be taught about sexual relationships or sexual activity in school. Instead, younger children should receive age-appropriate lessons on friendships, family life, respect, personal safety, body privacy and knowing how to seek help from trusted adults. We ask the Welsh Government to amend the RSE Code to set 12 as the minimum age for sex education.

Many parents believe that decisions about when children are introduced to sex education should better reflect children's emotional maturity. While safeguarding education is important, we believe there should be a clear distinction between teaching personal safety and teaching about sexual relationships.
Setting a minimum age of 12 would provide clarity for schools, reassurance for parents and ensure that the most sensitive aspects of sex education are introduced only when children are better able to understand them.
We are asking the Welsh Government to review and amend the statutory Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) Code to establish this minimum age while continuing to provide younger children with appropriate education on safety, respect and healthy relationships.
