Petition Develop a Men's Health Plan for Wales
Men in Wales experience significant health inequalities, including shorter life expectancy and higher rates of premature death from many major causes.
Men can also be less likely to access health services and seek help when they need it.
A coordinated Men's Health Plan could address these inequalities, improve prevention and early intervention, and ensure services better meet the needs of men across Wales.
More details
A Men's Health Plan should take a holistic approach to men's physical and mental health, recognising how these are interconnected.
It should consider areas including suicide prevention and mental health, cancer and cardiovascular disease, substance misuse, healthy lifestyles, social isolation, access to healthcare, and the wider social determinants of health.
The Plan should identify the inequalities experienced by different groups of men and set clear priorities and measurable actions for improving outcomes. It should involve men, health professionals, researchers and relevant third-sector organisations in its development.
Countries including Ireland, Australia and England have developed national men’s health strategies, while Canada and New Zealand are developing similar approaches.
Wales can and should learn from these examples and develop a plan suited to the needs of men in Wales.
