Rejected petition Request for a public bike-hire scheme in Cardiff

Cardiff's Nextbike scheme ended in December 2023 after issues including theft and vandalism. Cardiff Council later announced plans for a replacement scheme of up to 2,500 e-bikes, originally expected in spring 2026. Cardiff still has no public e-bike hire scheme. We want an affordable, reliable e-bike service across Cardiff to make travel easier and provide an alternative to cars and buses.

Cardiff previously had the Nextbike cycle-hire scheme, which provided residents and visitors with an affordable and convenient way to travel around the city. The scheme recorded more than 2 million rides before ending in December 2023 following issues including theft and vandalism.

In July 2025, Cardiff Council announced plans for a replacement cycle-hire scheme with up to 2,500 e-bikes, originally expected to launch in spring 2026. However, the scheme has still not launched, leaving Cardiff without a public cycle-hire service.

We believe Cardiff needs a modern e-bike scheme rather than simply bringing back traditional pedal bikes. E-bikes can make longer journeys and Cardiff's hills more manageable, while providing an affordable alternative to cars and public transport.

We are asking Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government to prioritise the introduction of an affordable, reliable e-bike hire scheme across Cardiff, with bikes and parking locations available throughout the city.
